Blackbird is one of the most meaningful creations I have ever designed.
The inspiration came from the song "Blackbird," made famous by Nina Simone in 1966. Years later, I also discovered another version connected to the movie Beyond the Lights. Both touched me deeply, but there was something about Nina Simone's voice and the emotion behind the song that stayed with me.
One day, while sitting in my backyard, I saw a blackbird. Instantly, the song came back to my mind. I had not listened to it in quite some time but seeing that bird sent me searching for the song again. I listened carefully to the lyrics and the message behind them.
As I listened, images began forming in my mind. Little by little, the artwork for Blackbird came to life.
To me, Blackbird is about freedom.
Sometimes life makes us feel trapped by fear, pain, doubt, circumstances, or the expectations of others. Sometimes we spend so much time looking at the cage that we forget we were meant to fly.
The bird in this design represents the moment we choose to move forward. The moment we stop allowing our past, our struggles, or our fears to define who we are.
This design is also inspired by the powerful message of finding your voice, standing in your truth, and embracing the freedom to become who you were always meant to be.
When I look at Blackbird, I see hope, courage, strength, and new beginnings.
I hope that when others see this design, they see more than artwork. I hope they see a reminder that even after difficult seasons, freedom is possible.
